Did you know…..?

While it is correct that it is not permitted to fly RC models above 400 feet (exceptions accepted), it is not correct that general aviation is not permitted to fly lower than 500 feet as is often thought. The rule states that they may not fly within 500 feet of persons, vessels, vehicles, structures and buildings except for taking off, landing, slope soaring and displays and shows where prior permission has been granted (A 1000 foot diameter bubble around the aircraft is the shape to imagine).

So, if you hear an approaching aircraft that sounds low you should lose some height and head towards the flying field to be safe. The pilot may be further than 500 feet from the field, as they should be, but lower than 500 feet and not seen your model due to its size. If you are standing at the edge of the field they may not realise you are there. Be safe.
